Episode 064 - Sci-Fi Intersection: Influences between Star Wars and Dune

Connor and Alex Season 3 Episode 12

This episode delves into the mutual influences between two science fiction properties: that of the world of Dune, crafted by Frank Herbert, and of the Star Wars universe as originally created by George Lucas and company. The first Dune novel released in 1959 certainly had influence on the 1977 release of A New Hope, while the recent Dune films are being released in a filmscape indelibly altered by the existence of 11 Star Wars films and a wide range of shows and media. The hosts compare and contrast the characters of Luke Skywalker and Paul Atreides, the role the antagonist Emperor plays in each setting, and how each saga examines the intersection of spiritually and mysticism with fantastical far-future technology. Connor and Alex also view the construction of prophecy and destiny between Star Wars and Dune, from the inevitable-but-positive victory of the heroes in Star Wars; to the more fatalistic take on fate from Dune.

This episode mentions content from and contains potential spoilers for: Star Wars Episodes 1 through 9, Dune, Dune: Messiah, and Children of Dune.
